Mel
Gibson's The Passion of the Christ is an act of personal
bravery and commitment on the part of its director to preserve his
artistic goal of creating the Passion of Christ ("Passion"
in this context meaning "suffering") as a quite literal,
in-your-face interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of
Jesus, scripted almost directly from the gospels (and spoken in
Aramaic and Latin with a relative minimum of subtitles) and presented
as a relentless, 126-minute ordeal of torture and crucifixion.

Was Jesus a carpenter?
An only child? Quiet and meek? Probably not. If you're surprised,
perhaps you should take a look at A&E's Biography: Jesus,
which reexamines his life in the context of his times. There's not
much to go on beyond the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John , but A&E uses interviews
with Biblical scholars, photography of the beautiful Galileean
countryside, and dramatic re-creations to bring his actions to life.

Originally made for TV
in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so
thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his
birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of
this famous story either. Passages of the Bible are quoted
verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity. Zeffirelli
diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to
Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of
Israel.

over time while unique special effects virtually reconstruct art that
has been destroyed or lost forever. A sweeping and visually riveting
lesson in art history, The Face: Jesus In Art is a documentary of
stunning beauty and unprecedented innovation.

This is the story of the
one-time friend and apostle to Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot, who
betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The four-disc set also
includes the uplifting New Testament stories of Joseph of Nazareth,
Mary Magdalene and the Apostle Thomas.
DVD
This TV movie doesn't
venture far from biblical accounts to dramatize the life of the Virgin
Mary. It gets off to a promising start by showing Mary to be a
resourceful and brave teenager, then
proceeds chronologically, and the major events of Mary's life, and the
life of Jesus, are played out in dramatic fashion. Mary is portrayed
as having to face a series of struggles and tests of faith, from the
time when she is terrified to meet the messenger of God who foretells
the birth of the Messiah to her witnessing the brutal scene of her
son's crucifixion.

The life of Christ got an
excessively long treatment (260 minutes, later trimmed to 195) in this
1965 film directed by George Stevens (The Diary of Anne Frank).
Max von Sydow does beautiful work as Jesus--his spontaneous mourning
at discovering his friend Lazarus has died is not like anything in
other New Testament epics--and Stevens renders the familiar tale with
a handsome authenticity.

Followers of and
believers in Jesus Christ will find much food for thought in this
exploration of His life and deeds. Spanning only a few hundred square
miles and three years, his travels might seem confined to those of us
used to intercontinental flights, but He ministered to many of His
homelanders in that time. Through modern documentary filming and
plenty of re-creations of 2,000-year-old events, Where Jesus Walked
presents the story of Judea from the time of Abraham through Christ's
death at Calvary.
VHS
Using a string of
dramatic re-enactments and CGI graphics supported by fresh insights
and expert analysis, "Ancient Evidence" officers a
comprehensive exploration into the Bible's most intriguing figures and
stories. Did Joseph actually predict a great famine? How did Mary
Magdalene become the world's most famous sinner? Are the Last Days
predicted in "Revelation" closer than we think? This series
examines scientific evidence to bring a new interpretation to the
scriptures.
